Red skies over Africa 3

Voy Kay 19 Mar 2020

12th African painting and my sixth in the series 'Red skies over Africa'. 'LJMpaintings' and 'Romain' pointed out to me that I should be comfortable with placing an animal into a 'single tree scenery' with a sunset, so ... here it is! AND there's an extra where 'community darling' 'Sunnylady' suggested to place a hornbill in it. I gladly followed her advice as well and hope you will enjoy both creatures!
Canvas used was a cheap budget 16"x20" yet primed at first with white gesso, further prepared with yellow acrylic and liquid clear afterwards. Both animals were exceptionally in dark grey so that I could compare the shading with my other silhouette paintings. No real difficulties in this painting or it might be the rhino which is not easy to paint at a smaller size!

Hope you all will enjoy this one and till next trip to Africa!

I love it!! Its the rhinos domain and he shares it with the hornbill. I feel like I am right there. Your silhouette detailing is amazing.

Great job Voy! I'm looking forward to knowing what animals from Africa's wildlife you'll paint next.

I think the way you put the bird and rhino is creating suspense in here. Also few birds already decided to eliminate themselves not to get in the trouble with those 2 guys.
Also both animals are located on the hills opposite each other. Very interesting effect!
Great details with the animals! I am amazed how you do them in such small size!

I also like the feel of the green color on the ground. I think this adds to the drama that is about to happen there due to the contrast to the red.

I have to say that I like this one with the animals better than without... (Just my opinion). It has movement and its telling me a story. A picture is worth a thousand words, and this one tells me more.

Dear LJM, so overwhelmed by your cheers and enthousiasm! You are so right, this particular painting simply demands some wildlife to be shown, nothing up front but just clearly present. That rhino on top of his hill really gives the impression it's boss of the surrounding area.
Your feeling of 'being right there' was indeed amplified by me with the more detailed grass and the size of the hornbill in that tree. Only the rhino size is rather small yet has to be seen as more distant then the other painted objects, hope I succeeded a little in that.
For the animal details, I refer to my article about this subject. The rhino wasn't easy at all, specially because of the dark grey colour that demands more and better finishing then using black. And the fact ... that detailed painting is VERY difficult for me since a large part of my body (including dominant painting hand) was partially paralyzed due to an unfortunate event in life. A scriptliner or similar are really very tough tools for me to handle.
Most happy I am that this painting and its silhouettes makes you and other community members happy, then my efforts are really worth a million!

Dear Romain, so glad you like this painting and can already tell you that (most probably) next animal will have its roots from one of your creations. Watch for it the next couple of weeks!

Great comments again from you Sunnylady, you really read my paintings very right!
I deliberately made the soil/grass lighter and more explicit in front of that giant sun. The viewer feels more drawn/involved into the picture and those animals really have some story/drama to tell so you want to be close to that.
The creation of it .... well, you read the article about silhouettes and hope you will read my reply to LJM as well. Silhouettes are very fun to do for me yet the smaller they are, the more difficult or even impossible it is for me to draw. I really need to plan such paintings well ahead to see what's suitable or not. But in all .... I so much love those African paintings (probably only one more red skies to come) and I'm even more thrilled and excited that other community members like/love them as well.
Till next one!

I love it voy,Great job!

Thank you Patoex, long time no see. Stay safe and till next one!!

Hi voy, i will thnx, you to my friend!

The sky and animals are wonderful, great work except leaves.
In my opinion you should practice leaves.
If leaves spoil your masterpiece, that is the tragedy for you.

Voy Kay Conqueror of Challenges

Dear Jin, thx for your cheers and advice. The leaves look worser in a picture then they are on the painting. I used a mix of green and brown with a very slight touch of yellow as a very tiny highlight at the bottom, where the sun is located. The form of the leaves can be seen as strange, yes, but Africa has its surprises! In all my African paintings, I try to change my trees and specially the leaves, else all looks a bit too identical.
Till next one!
